This area of outstanding natural beauty is situated in the Northumberland National Park.
Away from the hustle and bustle, it offers an oasis of peace and tranquillity - quiet roads lead you through glorious countryside to the largest man-made lake in Western Europe set deep in the Kielder Forest. Here you can choose to be relaxed or as energetic as you wish; walking, fishing, mountain biking, horse riding, sailing, sculpture and architectural trails or a ferry ride around the lake are just a few ideas.
The special landscape of Kielder Water and Forest Park makes it a haven for wildlife. It is home to 75% of the UKs native red squirrel population, the last remaining stronghold in England. Other mammals living in and around this area include badgers, roe deer, otters, shrews, voles and seven species of bat. There are squirrel and bird viewing hides to visit where you can see the native wildlife or alternatively you could take one of the many wildlife tours throughout the year. A huge variety of birds can be found at Kielder; with birds of prey being a common site, including buzzards, goshawks and ospreys.
The clear unpolluted night skies mean Kielder will also be home to the newly constructed Kielder Observatory.
Situated one hour North West of Newcastle, one hour west of Alnwick, and twenty five minutes north of Hadrians Wall, Kielder and Redesdale are ideally placed as a base for a touring holiday or part of a two centre break.
